8 Reasons I’ll Miss the School Holidays

DSC_0276

School is going back all over the country over the next week! My newsfeed is full of first days and new uniforms and parents announcing “FREEDOM!!!” There’s biggest and youngest babies starting school – and from what I can tell the latter is more difficult to deal with for the Mums and Dads.

Part of me can’t believe the holidays are over! It feels like the summer holidays will go forever, really, foooorrreeeevvvveeeerrrrr. They’re like 27 weeks long or something?! But here we are going back tomorrow and I’ll admit I’m not 100% entirely happy about it. Because there’s plenty of things I’ll miss about school holidays (and many things I’m looking forward to!)

I’ll miss:

No uniforms – enough said.

No school lunches – I still have to feed them obviously but I don’t have to plan what I’ll feed them until they’re actually saying “Mummy, I’m hungry!”

No homework – BLISS! I’m pretty sure I hate homework more than my child does.

Sleep ins – I almost feel like I shouldn’t admit to this one, my littlest sleeps in until 9-10am if we let her, so I’ve spent much of the school holiday mornings curled up in her bed while big school-aged-boy gets himself up. I can hear him put the TV on and rattle around in the kitchen, but I don’t get out of bed until I absolutely have to. It’s been ah-may-zing.

Late nights – okay, so, the kids have been going to bed later to compensate for the sleeping in (or vice versa) HOWEVER the awesome thing about late nights is it is day light until 9pm at the moment. Their dad gets home from work and we can still actually go out somewhere and have some family time before bed.

No drop offs and pick ups – as a not very organised chronically late kind of person I find having to be somewhere at a specific time 10 whole times a week a little stressful. Though I’m proud to announce last year I was only late dropping him off a handful of times and was always at school before he came out of his classroom. Hopefully I can repeat this success for the next decade!

Lazy days – oh, we had some serious lazy days. Everyone in their PJs until bedtime and then shower and get into bed in different PJs (probably) Pillows and blankets on the couch. Eating breakfast cereal for every meal. It was a bit spectacular.

Quality time for the kids – there was some bickering and we all had some moments, but I find my kids get along better when they have more time together. On school days the little one waits ALL DAY to see her big brother and when we pick him up he’s tired and doesn’t want to play with her… and she’s 2… she doesn’t take rejection well.

Things I’m looking forward to:

Diet and exercise – in a “I’m looking forward to how this will feel once I get started” kind of way. I can exercise with one small child, but not with two, it just doesn’t work. And “it’s the school holidays” has been my excuse to eat basically anything my heart desires. Time to cook up a big pot of cabbage soup and get serious!

Peace and quiet – I’ll still have one child at home, but she’s pretty chilled out companion. She’s the kind of small child I can actually take to a café and she will usually sit long enough to enjoy a coffee.

School mums – 90% of my daily adult interaction happen at the school gate. Going a little bit crazy here.

Routine – I’ve loved the no routine thing, but I really could go for some routine about now.

Missing my big kid – one of the best things about school is when I pick my big one up he’s genuinely happy to see me and I’m happy to see him; it’s nice.

Having a better screen to person ratio – there’s only 1 tv in the house and while we shouldn’t all be watching TV all day it’s a bit challenging when we all want to watch the TV at the same time.

Less mess – can someone please explain to me how twice as many children can make three times as much mess in a day? Or use five times as many cups?!? Also all the time the big one says “Mummy, can we do science experiments?”

Not to worry, school will be back in full swing in no time and before we know it, it’ll be school holidays again anyway!

What do you love (and not love) about school holidays?
