The Best Double Prams for 2017

I’ve been searching the internet, baby stores and baby expos to find all the best double prams in Australia. It can be tricky to find a great double pram, there’s so many things to consider, so let me help narrow it down a little.

Firstly there are two basic types of double prams. Side by side double prams are usually wider, but generally offer better steering and have bigger baskets. On the other hand it’s a lot harder to find a side by side double pram that has parent facing seats (without needing to buy a carry cot/bassinet separately). On that note I’ll give an honorary mention to the Bugaboo Donkey which is featured in our previous Best Double Prams list – because it does offer parent facing toddler seats. Inline tandem prams are generally a lot narrower and you often get more options for parent-facing seats, but they’re also usually longer which can impact the steering,

Best Side By Side Double Prams

Valco Baby Snap Ultra Duo – $749

The Valco Baby Snap Ultra Duo does offer the elusive parent and forward facing seats on a side by side double! Winning! Also the seats are suitable from birth as they lie back completely flat with a one handed strap recline. The pram has a good weight capacity of 20kgs per seat. The total pram weight is only 13.5kgs so it is a reasonably light weight pram. It’s not the most robust pram, though I think that’s the compromise sometimes with a light weight pram. Otherwise it has a huge basket, pockets on the back of the seats, and comfortable padded seats.

Mountain Buggy Duet 2017 $899

The Mountain Buggy Duet 2017 model is lighter weight and more compact when folded than the previous Duet models. The Mountain Buggy Duet is one of the narrowest side by side prams. It’s only 63cms wide which means it’s the width of a single pram – however this does mean that the seats are also a little narrow. So it’s going to be suited to more petite toddlers. Also it can be used as a single or a side by side double by switching the “Joey bag” for a second seat. So this is going to be great either for twins, or for a growing family. Otherwise it’s a very sturdy, all-terrain pram, with air tyres, big basket, good sized hoods and excellent maneuverability. It also has a hand-brake for controlling your speed.

Baby Jogger City Mini GT Double  – $929

If you’ve read any of my previous pram lists you’ll know I love Baby Jogger. They just make very reliable, well thought out, good quality, prams. The Baby Jogger City Mini GT is essentially the deluxe version of the Baby Jogger City Mini (Which was also featured on our last Best Double Pram list!) The City Minis are incredibly quick and easy to fold – watch this video to see the fold in action. Also it has a large hood, huge basket, good sized wheels that’ll handle a bit of rough terrain. The seats are suitable for newborns as they fully lie back with a one handed strap recline.

Thule Urban Glide 2 $1,009

Thule Urban Glide 2 is a running pram that does have a lockable swivel wheel so it’s still going to be maneuverable for everyday strolling. But it’s still a great pram for serious running! It has a 30cm front air tyre and 40cm air tyres at the back so you’ll “glide” along with this pram. As well as a handy hand-brake (sorry I think I’m funny) so you can control your speed, especially running on hills. The seat doesn’t lie flat for newborns, though you can purchase a bassinet separately. Just keep in mind you can’t run with a newborn – but that is something to discuss with your baby’s doctor.

Bumbleride Indie Twin – $1060

I recently reviewed the Bumbleride Indie Twin in detail; which you can read here. The Bumbleride Indie Twin is an all-terrain beast of a pram. It handled some off-roading, and also a bit of jogging. It’s also an eco-friendly pram, because the fabric is made from recycled plastic bottles! So cool! It’s a perfect pram for people who love the environment and spend a lot of time outdoors. It has large air tyres, excellent suspension, heaps of pockets (6 in total, not including the pocket for the tyre pump which is included!). It also has a large and accessible basket, huge hood, and a tough metal frame.

Best Inline Tandem Double Prams

Babybee Prams Comet Duo* – $699

I recently had the opportunity to review this pram in detail, which you can read here. The babybee prams Comet Duo offers incredibly good value for money (And the least expensive pram on this list). It’s a very versatile pram; both seats are reversible and can be exchanged for a bassinet or car seat. So there are many different configurations. I also love that you can purchase colour packs separately for just $79 to transform the look of your pram; these include two hoods and two seat liners. Also the basket is enormous, though it’s a little tricky to access for larger items. Both seats have two pockets on the back, and it comes with a travel organiser; which I think makes up for the awkwardness of the basket.

The seats are not suitable for newborns, though the pram does come with the fabric kit for one bassinet. If you’re buying the Comet Duo for newborn twins you’ll need to purchase an additional bassinet kit separately.

Babyhood Doppio – $1000

I also recently reviewed the babybood Doppio, which does have a lot of similarities to the babybee prams Comet Duo. They are both double prams that can be used with just one seat. Both also have two reversible seats and offers the same versatility of a full travel system. However the BIG feature with this pram is both the seats  convert easily into bassinets – which is AMAZING. So it’s a perfect pram for newborn twins right through to toddlerhood. Also the basket has a separate front pocket to tuck items away from the feet of the child on the back, that is easily accessible from the front. So that’s a great little feature.

Strider Compact Deluxe  – $848

Many years ago I actually had the original version of this pram, the Strider Plus – and it was one of the best prams I owned. As the name suggests the Strider Compact Deluxe is the more compact – and more luxurious – version of my old pram. Though it’s still not exactly a lightweight pram, the total pram weight with two seats is just under 16kgs. So it’s still a hefty pram. And while you CAN fold it with both seats attached – it’s a lot easier and more compact if you lift it into into your car in pieces. Otherwise it’s a great all round pram; huge basket, roomy seat, the main seat can be parent facing, easy to push and has lots of padding for your child’s comfort.

Though the seats don’t lie back for newborns so you will need to purchase a bassinet/carrycot separately. Also the Strider Compact can also be used as a single pram.
