Bugaboo Donkey 5 – Mono, Duo & Twin

I still remember the excitement when the Bugaboo Donkey was first announced. Which is both an indication of the incredible innovation of this pram, and also the very effective marketing of the brand. But the Bugaboo Donkey is impressive in the way the frame actually expands to accommodate two children side by side. That said, even in “mono” mode (single mode) it’s still a very wide pram. Though the little shopping basket on the is a nice way to add value to the extra width.

The Bugaboo Donkey can also be purchased as a twin pram – two seat frames, with bassinet fabric and upright seat fabric for both frames. One thing I absolutely love about the Bugaboo Donkey is it’s one of the very few side by side double prams that allows your babies to face you, or face away (or one facing you and the other facing away. Whatever!)

Impressively it can also fold with both seats attached, however it is a big pram even when folded and weighs 15kgs as a double. So you’ll need strong arms and a big car to be able to leave the Donkey in one piece to transport it.

Bugaboo Donkey Mono

Most single to double prams start out as exactly that – a single pram that can then later convert to a double. However the majority of parents are looking at the Bugaboo Donkey V5 are going the other way around. Most people buy the Bugaboo Donkey for their second baby, planning to use it as a double from day one.

However it is nice to have the option when you do have an age gap between little ones, to be able to convert to single mode when you’ve only got one with you.

The Bugaboo Donkey Mono is a BIG pram still, much bigger than most single prams. Though one BIG advantage of this is the storage space. The Bugaboo Donkey is a shopping pram. In fact you can extend out the frame to double mode even with one child if you want to expand your basket space.

Perfect pram for a big grocery shop.

Bugaboo Donkey Duo

One of Bugaboo Donkeys slogans is “Smaller than you think” because while it is a huge single pram, it’s actually not nearly as big as it looks as a double. It’s 74cms wide, which is a pretty standard full sized double pram.

Converting your Donkey Mono into a Duo you have a couple of options depending on the age gap between your little ones. You can opt to JUST purchase a second seat frame, hood and bumper bar – and assemble with the cot and seat fabric that comes with the pram when you purchase a mono.

Though you won’t be able to use it as a double for more than about 6months without purchasing a second seat fabric as well.

The super sweet thing is whether you’re using two seats or seat and cot if they’re facing in different directions your little ones can actually see each other and chat in the pram.

Though they are VERY close together, so you want to be sure they’re being friendly!

The Bugaboo Donkey is a very popular pram for parents of twins, because it’s one of the very few double prams that allows you to have both babies (or toddlers) facing you at the same time. Both your little ones are on even level when it comes to their view of the world, or their favourite view of all – you!

If you purchase the Bugaboo Donkey Twin you’ll get two seat frames, two cot fabrics, seat fabrics, two belly bars and two hoods – so you’ll all set! (Though it will set you back a bit – usually around $2k all up depending on your fabric choices!)

Bugaboo Donkey Triple

I thought I’d also mention that the Bugaboo Donkey is one of the only prams in Australia that offer the option of three seats. While not a true triple pram, but with the Bugaboo Board technically you can get three sitting down.
