Ergobaby Aerloom – Comfortable, Stylish and Eco-Friendly Baby Carrier

ergobaby aerloom review

Ergobaby has just released their latest – Limited Edition – carrier, the Ergobaby Aerloom, and it is a unique, comfortable, and cleverly designed baby carrier.

I have always been a big fan of Ergobaby. I’ve previously reviewed:

I even made some of the videos for the Ergobaby Australia and NZ Youtube Channel including some instructional videos on how to use their carriers! And of course, I owned an Ergobaby carrier with my own babies (though it was the original style of Ergobaby that needed an infant insert and didn’t offer the forward facing position like the modern Ergobaby carriers do!)

Ergobaby Aerloom Features At A Glance

Overall the Ergobaby Aerloom is a comfortable, lightweight, easy to use, eco-friendly baby carrier that is suitable from birth and gives parents the options of the three main carry positions – inward-facing, forward-facing and back carry.

It’s also a very stylish and sleek looking carrier – with a knit mesh style of fabric unlike anything else I’ve seen in a baby carrier before.

Unique “FormaKnit” Fabric

My first impression of the Ergobaby Aerloom is the fabric is unlike anything else I’ve ever seen in a baby carrier. It’s made from Ergobaby’s new “FormaKnit” material, which has a slight stretch, so it moulds to the natural shape and curve of you and your baby’s body, while also being firm and supportive.

Also being a knit fabric, they have been able to knit curves into the carrier – whereas with woven fabrics curves are created by cutting and sewing into shape. As someone who knits and sews I found that aspect of the Ergobaby Aerloom very interesting and clever.

I also think the knit fabric just looks luxurious, sophisticated and polished.

Made From 87% Recycled Drink Bottles

I also LOVE the fact that the material is made from 87% post-consumer recycled polyester. In fact, there are 26 recycled plastic bottles in each and every Ergobaby Aerloom, which I think is a great step towards making a more eco-friendly baby carrier.

Also because the fabric panels are knitted into shape, rather than cut to shape, there is less overall wastage.

Then they use more eco-friendly packaging for the Ergobaby Aerloom to further reduce the overall carbon footprint.

Ergobaby Aerloom is Easy To Use

One of the things that make the carrier look more polished is there are fewer fiddly details. There’s no buttons, no velcro, and minimal clips to do up and change around.

So it is very simple and easy to use. With a little practice (as with any carrier) I believe new parents will be able to put on and take off the Ergobaby Aerloom with ease.

There are also step by step picture instructions sewn into the waistband of the carrier. Which firstly are great as a visual reminder of how to set up and put on the Ergobaby Aerloom, but also it’s a helpful way to ensure that you’re putting on the waistband the right way up.

Watch the video above to see just how easy is it to put on and take off the Ergobaby Aerloom.

Ergonomically Shaped Shoulder Straps

Another little feature that I think has a big impact of making the Ergobaby Aerloom more comfortable and easier to use are the curved shoulder straps.

The shoulder straps curve inwards towards your shoulder blades, which isn’t only more comfortable and more of an ergonomic shape, but I found when putting on and tightening the straps I was able to get perfect contact and support across my shoulders with minimal adjustments.

Something I’ve noticed can be a challenge with other structured carriers, including the Ergobaby Omni 360 is getting the shoulder straps to fit flat on your shoulder. Again a hard thing to explain, and easier to show. I do also talk about this in the review video above.

But basically, I believe this new curved shape will be much easier for parents to get that perfect fit every time, without needing someone to explain to them how to adjust their straps for an optimal fit.

Ergobaby Omni VS Ergobaby Aerloom

I’m sure people will be wondering how is the Ergobaby Aerloom different to the Omni, and why would they choose one over the other?

Ergobaby Omni 360 has a higher weight capacity.

The weight capacity of the Ergobaby Omni 360 is 20kgs, whereas the weight capacity of the Ergobaby Aerloom is 15.9kgs. While most parents aren’t using their baby carrier up to that full 20kgs limit, it is something to keep in mind if a higher weight capacity is important to you.

Ergobaby Omni 360 has the option of 100% cotton.

I understand some parents would prefer to use a baby carrier with natural fibres, so despite the environmentally friendly aspect of the Ergobaby Aerloom, if that is something that is important to you it might be worth looking at the Ergobaby Omni 360 Cotton instead.

No Hip Carry Position and No Option to Cross Straps at the Back

While the Ergobaby Omni offers a fourth carry position – a hip carry – and also allows parents to cross the straps over at the back, the Ergobaby Aerloom does not. I imagine the reason for this would be the curved shape in the shoulders straps. Because the straps have been shaped to fit the contour of your back and shoulders, they really have been designed to go that one way across your body. If you started to change the configuration of the shoulder straps you’d lose the benefit of that curved shape. This would be the same reason that a hip carry also wouldn’t be ideal.

I personally believe the benefit of that curved shoulder strap outweighs the limitations, however, if the ability to cross the straps at the back OR the option to carry your baby on your hip is important to you, then definitely check out the Ergobaby Omni 360 Cool Mesh or Cotton.

Final Thoughts

The Ergobaby Aerloom is a premium baby carrier. As well as offering all the features you’d expect from an Ergobaby carrier, the fact that it’s made from 87% recycled materials, it’s super light well and has stylish look of the knit fabric as well makes it well worth it for a parent who’s looking for a baby carrier that offers them just that bit extra.
